Information about Pomeranians.

A member of the toy group of dogs, the Pomeranian is a small Spitz type of dog much loved by Queen Victoria. The Pomeranian takes its name from the Pomerania region of Central Europe, a region now part of both Germany and Poland.

The Pomeranian has its origins with the sled dogs of Greenland and Lapland. Reduced in size by selective breeding, the Pom is a German Spitz type of dog, hence it is also known by the name Toy German Spitz or Dwarf Spitz.

The Pomeranian is a small, intelligent and energetic little dog, better suited perhaps to the older owner. Perhaps because it does appeal to the older person, it is consistently one of the most popular breeds of dog. It does not need tremendous amounts of exercise, requiring nothing more than a short walk each day. With nothing more than that short walk and some playtime at home with its owner, it will be a more than happy little companion dog.

Some Pomeranians have been known to live as long as 20 years, an age that is considered exceptional for a dog.
